I can definitely see why this album is AOTY 2018. Kacey’s voice is so gentle, soft, and euphoric. She is a country queen 💛

    This is a great album!
  • This isn’t Country: but it’s dipped in a little magic.

(Let me preface that I’m not a new fan—I’ve followed her for 5 years). In this album, it’s very apparent that she’s trying something different in the same way that Jack White tries other sounds in his other bands from time to time. And, let me also say that Kacey Musgraves isn’t exactly “country.” She’s a little bit of everything: nostalgic country, folk, indie, and outlaw mixed with beautifully added modern elements. It’s as if Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, and super sultry country vixen Bobby Gentry combined all of their female DNA and poof: we have the modern-day Kacey who stepped straight out of a time capsule to join us. Her vibes are refreshing considering that I dislike modern country for its dowdy, formulaic content and sound from one song to another. Her brilliant and liberated lyrics (sprinkled with a delightful touch of darkness in other albums) aren’t apologetic in this album either. BUT, don’t expect this collection to be anything like her previous vibes. Loyal fans (and this was even said by many negative-star reviewers) will continue to support her as she explores different elements; she’s more than earned it. However, I truly feel that she will go back to singing her normal and more folky, independent, outlaw style. So, go in with an open mind, listen to the lyrics, and you may find a part of yourself in the music. (And, if there are any long-time Grace Potter fans here, you may be able to relate to this shift as Grace has done a very similar thing). Let’s just hope she doesn’t get swept up by the fame-cloud and turn mainstream. Kacey, I hope you’re reading this: Please stay exquisitely you.
